When LEGO® released the R2-D2 (75379) set, two thoughts immediately came to mind: selling my Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) R2-D2 (75308) because of the new set’s perfect size, and how incredible it would look next to C-3PO in the same scale. I never expected LEGO® to actually release a matching C-3PO set (75398), so when it happened, I was ecstatic. But does it live up to expectations? Let’s dive in.
Design and Build: A Masterclass in LEGO® Engineering
Creating a LEGO® version of C-3PO is no small feat. The designers had to ensure the figure was stable on its stand while capturing its iconic, curved silhouette. The result is a 38 cm (15 in) tall model that pairs beautifully with R2-D2 (75379). However, one thing is missing: a base for R2-D2. A connected base system would have made the duo look even better as a single display piece—something many Adult Fans of LEGO® (AFOLs) are already customizing.
The set introduces 34 new Pearl Gold elements, a rare color that helps achieve a screen-accurate look. While the figure is mostly static, it allows for some arm and head movement, adding a touch of interactivity.
The Head: A Minor Letdown
The head is the weakest part of the build. While the overall shape is well-done, the eyes feel slightly off. On the plus side, LEGO® used a printed piece for the mouth and nose instead of a sticker, a detail that enhances the model’s authenticity. However, some areas, like the wiring on the torso and hands, still rely on stickers. The finger design is excellent, though the hands can’t hold objects.

Clever Techniques and Color Choices
The build incorporates smart techniques, such as using Technic elements to create a subtle tilt between the legs and torso, improving the figure’s posture. The arms feature rod pieces to mimic wiring, adding realism.

The legs are sturdy and well-attached to the base, making the model easy to reposition. My only critique is the use of Light Bluish Gray instead of Metallic Silver, which would have given the legs a more premium, metallic appearance.
Minifigure: A High-Quality Bonus
This set includes a C-3PO minifigure, identical to the one from set 75341. It’s the best LEGO® version of C-3PO yet, with detailed printing and dual-molded legs, perfectly matching the droid’s design. I was relieved LEGO® didn’t skimp on quality here.

Extras and Display Features
The set comes with a printed plaque featuring C-3PO’s details, a great addition for display. There’s also a 25th Anniversary LEGO® Star Wars™ brick, though it’s not exclusive to this set.

Value for Money: Worth the Investment?
With 1,138 pieces, the set is priced at:
- €139.99 (EUR)
- $139.99 (USD)
- £124.99 (GBP)
- AUD 220.00 (approx.)
- DKK 1,040.00 (approx.)
- SEK 1,550.00 (approx.)
- PLN 620.00 (approx.)
- R$ 700.00 (approx.)
The price per piece is high, but the Pearl Gold elements and display quality justify the cost. Since it’s not an exclusive set, discounts from third-party sellers are likely.
Final Thoughts: A Must-Have for Star Wars Collectors
The LEGO® Star Wars™ C-3PO (75398) is an outstanding set with innovative building techniques and a stunning final appearance. While there are minor compromises—like the eye design and leg color—they’re understandable for stability. The inclusion of a high-quality minifigure and display plaque makes it even more appealing.
If you’re a Star Wars or LEGO® fan, this set is a fantastic addition, especially if you already own R2-D2 (75379). Together, they create a perfect display duo that any collector would love.
