From Sketch to Sculpture

Every great build begins with an idea, and for CUBETTARO, that spark arrived after winning the Grand Prize in the LEGO® Ideas “Pets in Play” Challenge. Wanting to push his artistic limits, he started sketching how a puppy hugging a kitten might look. Those freehand drawings became blueprints for empathy, each pencil line searching for the perfect emotional balance.

Once satisfied with the sketches, he switched to Bricklink Stud.io, a digital LEGO® design tool, to translate his vision into brick form. Initially, the kitten and puppy were built separately, but he soon realized the connection felt too arbitrary. To preserve the emotional unity of the scene, he merged them into one solid structure. This decision not only gave the model stability but also made the hug feel genuine, as if frozen in one heartfelt moment.

Designing the sculpture wasn’t easy, each angle had to be tested to prevent collisions between parts, and every curve had to feel organic. The goal was to make the piece appear as one continuous form rather than a collection of smaller builds. CUBETTARO meticulously zoomed in on each element until the design achieved what he calls “dynamic stillness”, a lifelike sense of movement without a single misplaced stud.

Built with Heart and Precision

True Friends contains 2,684 pieces the structure measures 33 cm wide, 31 cm long, and 24 cm high, creating a perfect display size for any shelf or workspace. Despite its complexity, the build is designed to be approachable. Builders can assemble it as one unified sculpture, with carefully designed sub-elements that lock together intuitively.
