Somewhere in Billund, a designer looked at a minifigure and thought: what if you had to cut it off a sprue first? That cheeky question is now an official set. LEGO® Ideas 40889 Build, Paint and Play is a 158-piece tribute to the model kit hobby, with a cutting mat, a hobby knife, paint tubes, glue and a grey minifigure still on its frame, as we first reported when the set was revealed. It becomes a Gift with Purchase on 28 October 2026 with a €130, £115, US$130, CA$170 or AU$210 spend on LEGO.com or in LEGO® Stores, while stocks last.

The story starts in summer 2025, when LEGO® Ideas asked fans to capture their favourite pastime in 200 to 250 elements for the Build Your Favourite Hobby challenge. Builders sent in 480 entries, 15 made the fan vote, and fan designer Doomslizer won with Build, Paint and Play!, a vignette that used one hobby to celebrate another.
The original pitch featured a grey minifigure on a sprue, paint pots, brushes and a blue Classic Space astronaut as the finished example (plus ten copies of the final set as the prize).

LEGO®'s designers swapped the paint pots for squeezable tubes labelled 107, 26 and 24, which are LEGO®'s own internal colour codes for Teal, Black and Yellow. The blue astronaut gave way to a fully assembled teal one, the colour fans voted for in 2024. The real prize sits on the sprue: a Light Bluish Gray Classic Space helmet and air tanks, in modern grey for the first time. Pair them with the Series 17 Rocket Boy torso and a nine-year mismatch with 1980s Light Gray parts finally disappears.

With only two numbered bags, this one builds fast and leans on tiles, stickers and clever little assemblies rather than classic stacking, a fun palate cleanser beside a bigger build. The November 2026 line-up offers easy ways to reach the threshold: 11390 Shenron and Goku, 21065 Sagrada Família or 11388 Venetian Neighbourhood would each do the job alone. If you only want the grey parts, Pick a Brick will likely stock them within months. So who will you build on that sprue, a proper grey astronaut or a new Classic Space recruit?
