A GT3 racer just got a second helping of bricks. Mattel Brick Shop has unveiled the '15 Audi R8 LMS Deluxe Version, set number JNM81, and it is not just a reprint of last year's favorite. This one comes stuffed with 861 pieces, 41 more than the original Audi R8 LMS (JFT18) that launched the line, and every one of those extra bricks earns its place.

The original 820-piece build already turned heads with its removable greenhouse roof and a steering wheel that actually connects to the front axle, and the Deluxe Version keeps every one of those tricks while adding carbon fiber-style bricks in the bodywork, a more detailed engine under the opening hatch, and smooth resin pieces built to click together without a fight. Three sets of wheel covers ship in the box this time, up from two, so you can swap looks as often as you swap opinions about which livery suits a GT3 car best.

This is not an invented shape dressed up to look fast. The real '15 Audi R8 LMS debuted in 2009 as the first-ever model from Audi Sport customer racing, built to FIA GT3 specifications around a V10 engine, and went on to win the Nürburgring 24 Hours seven times overall.

That record gives this 1:16 scale build genuine bragging rights on the shelf, right down to opening doors and an engine hatch that reveals the mechanical guts most model cars keep hidden. Every Audi R8 LMS build, Deluxe or otherwise, ships with a matching 1:64 scale metal Hot Wheels car and a metal signature plate, a nice touch for anyone who wants a pocket-sized version sitting next to the full build. Pricing for the Deluxe Version has not been confirmed yet and will likely vary by region.

If you already built the original JFT18 and loved the engineering, the Deluxe Version gives you a reason to go again with sharper details and more customization in the box. If you skipped the first release, this is arguably the better entry point. Either way, 861 pieces of endurance-racing pedigree is waiting to be snapped together.
