Lights, camera, bricks! Pioneering: The Vintage Film Camera just reached the full 10,000 supporters on LEGO® Ideas, and it earns every single vote. Built by Shawshank, this model recreates an early 20th-century bellows camera right down to the leather-style folding front and a 40-inch brick-built tripod. Ever wondered what photography looked like before the smartphone in your pocket?

Here is where the building gets genuinely exciting. The bellows (that accordion-style middle section real cameras used) folds in, though you first lift it off the body, just like photographers did over a century ago. The rear of the camera swings open to reveal the inside, where a slide of film would rest in the empty space. Close the back door, work the forced opening and closing shutter, and you have yourself a working-ish replica. That is a lot of clever mechanical play packed into one handsome little box.

Shawshank started tinkering with this design back in September 2023 and refined it into a model that leans into real photographic history. Think camera obscura, think the daguerreotype of 1839, think the Kodak Brownie that first put cameras in everyday hands. Capturing all that heritage in LEGO® form is no small snap, and the result looks right at home on any shelf or display gallery.

With 10,000 supporters secured, Pioneering: The Vintage Film Camera now heads into the LEGO® review stage, where the team decides whether it becomes an official set. That folding front and opening rear would make a delightful companion to the growing shelf of brick-built nostalgia pieces.

So picture this on your desk, bellows and all. Would you keep it folded or proudly posed for the gallery? Either way, this one developed into something special. Prost indeed!
