But Sérgio Batista went the other way. His latest LEGO® MOC celebrates a humble beige station wagon, the Ford Escort MK1 Estate, and somehow makes it the most charming thing on four plastic wheels.
A Tiny Engine, A Big Personality
This Speed Champions scale MOC skips the standard toolkit. No factory mudguards, no SC-specific wheels. Instead, Batista engineered quirks: a messy 1.2L gasoline engine under the hood, a full rollcage inside, two spare wheels replacing the back seats, and a fire extinguisher for dramatic flair. Even the minifigs inside look like they’re one corner away from disaster.
Details like wipers, mudflaps, a rally map, and a good old-fashioned road map instead of GPS ground the build in vintage authenticity.
Rare Pieces, Real Memories
It’s not just about the parts, it’s about the story. Pirate hooks and chromed pieces sneak in to add a retro sparkle. The stickers, crafted by Tiago Vasconcelos, personalize the Escort with nods to Batista’s own life: ACP club badge, his initials and birth year on the plate, and even the Webnial logo, the Portuguese company printing his decals for three years. It’s a love letter in LEGO® form, especially since his father once owned the real car.
