It’s official. The mighty LEGO® Godzilla has crushed through the 10,000 supporter barrier and is now set to become an official LEGO Ideas set next year! Submitted by fan designer MattE720 on December 26, 2023, this monumental model has captured the attention of the franchise. It’s not every day a kaiju rises from the ocean of ideas and roars its way straight into LEGO immortality.

The Monster Awakens
For decades, Godzilla has towered over pop culture as the ultimate cinematic creature of city destruction. First appearing in 1954, in the “King of the Monsters”, and evolved from a symbol of post-war anxiety into a global icon of humanity last hope to defend us from other kaiju. MattE720’s model takes inspiration from the movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The sculpted head, the jagged dorsal fins, the and tail are all built from clever brick techniques that give this creature an organic, cinematic presence. It’s perfect to stomp through your LEGO city!
A Fan’s Dream Reborn
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time MattE720 has apply his brick-built Godzilla to LEGO Ideas. This version is second submission, rebuilt and refined after the first attempt gained traction but didn’t reach the approval of LEGO. Fueled by fan enthusiasm and his own growing love for the monster, Matt gave it another shot, and this time, it roared past to become a full featured LEGO set.

In his own words, he was “blown away by the new look” of Godzilla in recent films and knew it would translate beautifully into LEGO form. The set merges detailed shaping with solid playability, bridging the gap between younger builders who want a toy and older fans who crave a collectible.

Why LEGO Godzilla Matters
LEGO has never ventured into the world of kaiju before, making this project something entirely new for the brand. It’s a bold step into uncharted LEGO territory. With new Godzilla films and series emerging around the franchise, this could be an opportunity for more.

The Road Ahead
Matt expresses his gratitude to LEGO and supporters for the journey, calling it a “dream come true” and an “opportunity to bring something LEGO has never tackled before.” Whether you grew up watching the classic films or discovered the new cinematic universe, soon you’ll be able to build your own King of the Monsters, piece by powerful piece.

As the project moves into official development, fans are eager to see how LEGO’s designers will interpret this mighty creature. Will they add articulation? A miniature city to stomp through? Glowing atomic blue elements? Usually LEGO would take 18-20 months from announcement to release to the public, so we have a long wait ahead.
