LEGO® Icons has confirmed the 11386 SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom, a 1,794-piece tribute to the daftest neighbourhood in the ocean. At its heart sits SpongeBob's famous pineapple house, that cheerful yellow fruit with big fry-cook dreams inside, flanked by Squidward's stony Easter Island-style home and Patrick Star's humble rock, the one he sleeps happily beneath, roofless and without a single complaint.
The whole neighbourhood arrives at a much bigger LEGO® Icons scale, and every building opens up to reveal detailed interiors, so you can peek inside each oddball room. This is where fans of the show will lose it. SpongeBob, Patrick Star and Squidward all get brand-new minifigure moulds, sculpted to sit much closer to their cartoon selves. The SpongeBob figure is the star of the trio, sporting that confident grin and the usual square-shaped charm, and it looks like it stepped straight out of an episode.
The LEGO® designers have also packed Bikini Bottom with treats for keen-eyed fans of the classic Nickelodeon underwater series. Keep an eye out for Doodlebob, the mischievous scribble himself, Gary the Snail meowing away somewhere in the scene, and the faithful Boatmobile parked nearby. Tighter budget? The tiny 40858 SpongeBob SquarePants BrickHeadz arrives the same day for £10.99 (€12.99, US$12.99, AU$19.99, CAD$17.99), a cheerful sidekick to the main course. For many adult builders, this set doubles as a nostalgia machine, since the show that once played for kids now speaks straight to the grown-ups who quote it by heart. The big question is whether LEGO® gives us the rest of the neighbourhood.
