Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? On LEGO® Ideas, he lives inside a 1,720-piece brick-built tribute. Designer Vaicko built a poseable model of SpongeBob SquarePants, the absorbent, yellow, and porous cartoon star who has been making us giggle since the days of dial-up internet.
Here is where things get gloriously bendy. This SpongeBob SquarePants figure comes with three swappable mouth shapes, two sets of differently posed arms, and rotating shoes. Two connection points sit on each side of his body, so you can pin his arms wherever a scene demands. Want him flipping Krabby Patties as a Krusty Krab fry cook? Snap on the accessories. Fancy him blowing bubbles instead? That works too (and yes, you may hum the theme tune while you build).
The building tricks deserve a standing ovation. Vaicko used curved elements to capture those wavy sponge sides, a genuinely clever way to make hard plastic look soft and squishy. Printed pieces bring the details home, from the anchor on his hat to the freckles dotting his cheeks. Best of all? Remove the upper section of his back and a tiny Jellyfish Fields diorama waits inside, a hidden surprise that rewards curious hands.
The whole project reached 3,472 supporters before it was archived on LEGO® Ideas, so it will not be racing toward the 10,000-supporter goal anymore. Even so, it stands as a lovely reminder of what a single builder can pull off with clever geometry and a favorite character.
