Grab your glider and gather your friends, because Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Day of Black Sun has reached the full 10,000 supporters on LEGO® Ideas. Designer BuiltByCalvin recreated the Fire Nation Royal Palace at the exact moment of the eclipse, when Team Avatar storms the capital and the Firebenders lose their spark. Would you dare to invade during a solar eclipse? These builders did, in brick form.
The Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Day of Black Sun design packs a small army of characters into one palace. You get 15 minifigures, including Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Chief Hakoda and the flying lemur Momo, facing off against Fire Lord Ozai, Princess Azula and three Fire Nation soldiers. Zuko and a beefed-up Uncle Iroh round things out, and yes, Mai and Ty Lee sneak in to complete Azula's inner circle. Each minifigure carries a meaningful accessory, and the clever touches are everywhere (Aang's airbending sphere uses Mysterio's helmet piece, which is a genuinely smart bit of part-swapping).
The palace itself does a lot of tricks. A removable façade opens the Throne Room, the central tower lifts away for easy access from above, and there is a secret bunker where Ozai confronts Zuko at the height of the eclipse. Iroh's prison cell even has a function to collapse the bars once he has built his strength. And then there is Appa, the sky bison, sculpted in his classic furry look with a moving lower jaw and tail plus a saddle roomy enough for the whole team.
What makes this build shine is the memory behind it. BuiltByCalvin grew up dumping out the brick bin while watching the show on Saturday mornings, owned the two original LEGO® Avatar: The Last Airbender sets, and has wanted more ever since. A concert reunion sealed the deal, and the goal became simple: pack the most epic scene possible into the 5,000-piece limit.
With the full 10,000 supporters secured, Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Day of Black Sun now heads into the LEGO® review stage. Could the first official Avatar set in nearly two decades finally be on its way? The eclipse is over, but the balance may just be restored.
