LEGO® Ideas Totoro Set Could Bring Studio Ghibli Magic to Life

The forest spirit has spoken, or maybe just purred. Petrus Odyssey’s My Neighbor Totoro LEGO® Ideas project has reached the magic number: 10,000 supporters.

That means the whimsical gray guardian from Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 film might soon move from animation to the shelves. LEGO® will decide between May and June whether to make it official, alongside three other projects that fans have pushed into review.

The Master Behind the Magic

Hayao Miyazaki is animation’s quiet revolutionary. As co-founder of Studio Ghibli, he turned slow moments, empathy, and hand-drawn patience into storytelling power. Where Hollywood chased speed and spectacle, Miyazaki painted stillness and wonder. From Spirited Away to Howl’s Moving Castle, his work invites you for wonder, not just watch.

Released in 1988, My Neighbor Totoro became his most beloved creation. The film follows sisters Satsuki and Mei as they move to the countryside while their mother recovers in a hospital. Between tall grass and temple trees, they meet Totoro, a massive, furry guardian who snoozes in the forest and rides the wind on a Catbus. It’s fantasy without villains, told through watercolor skies and soft brushstrokes. The animation isn’t digital; it’s hand-drawn cel animation, the kind that breathes with texture, time and to me, smell.

The LEGO® Tribute Fans Demanded

The build by Petrus Odyssey, now part of the 10K Club, captures that same warmth in 2341 LEGO® pieces. The model includes five characters: sisters Satsuki and Mei, Totoro, Chuu Totoro (blue), and Chibi Totoro (white), all brick-built. The big Totoro even has two facial expressions, one serene, another smiling, and can sit in his iconic tree-trunk pose.

Studio Ghibli Meets LEGO®

Fans have been asking for a Studio Ghibli x LEGO® collaboration for years. With Totoro now under review, and three more fan projects in the queue, the message is clear: people want this universe made tangible. LEGO® has explored film worlds before, from Ghostbusters to The Lord of the Rings. A Ghibli line would blend cinematic artistry with buildable storytelling.

The Totoro set is more than a tribute; it’s a vote for serenity in plastic. It turns a quiet animated masterpiece into something you can hold, pose, and share.

The Calm Before LEGO’s Decision

Between May and June, LEGO® will decide if Totoro joins its official lineup. If approved, it would be a milestone not only for Petrus Odyssey but for fans who’ve long dreamed of Ghibli builds.
